Cuba President Raul Castro Inaugurated Mausoleum
Cuba President Raul Castro presided over the inhumation ceremony of the combatants fallen during the liberation struggle and the ones who died after the triumph of the Revolution on January 1st, 1959. The ceremony took place in the Mausoleum of Las Villas North Front in Yaguajay.
The opening of the mausoleum coincided with the commemoration of the 50 anniversary of the death of Commander Camilo Cienfiegos, who arrived in this central territory of the island on October 7, 1958 heading Column No. 2 Antonio Maceo.
Wreaths received from Fidel, Raul and the Cuban people were laid before placing the ossuaries in their corresponding engraved marble niches. The mausoleum will now shelter the remains of the 44 combatants of the guerrilla front integrated by the already mentioned military force plus the Maximo Gomez and the Marcelo Salado detachments.
After the tribute ceremony, Raul Castro and other Party and Revolution leaders greeted the relatives of the combatants.
The new mausoleum complements the complex built two decades ago which includes the Camilo Cienfuegos National Museum, an annexed square and a monument to the hero of Yaguajay. These works were created by Pedro Perez Agudin (architect) and Thelvia Marin Mederos (sculptor).
