Mother and Twins Saved from Influenza A (H1N1)
Cuban Yaetris Toledo Madrigal, who had been for a long time longing to have a child, was one day announced a twin pregnancy. But her 34-week gestation period demanded an early cesarean section due to the A (H1N1) virus.
Gynecology and Obstetrics specialist Omar Rangel Armas said this patient was admitted on her 31 week of pregnancy when a growth delay was identified in one of foetuses. Some days later, she had nasal secretion, cough and discomfort.
"Since the very first symptoms, I was tested for A (H1N1), which happened to be positive. I got scared and I had a high blood pressure, so I was transferred to the intensive care unit of the Camilo Cienfuegos regional hospital", said the patient.
"Every night I saw the doctors very busy by my side. I didn’t say anything, but I could figured out I was seriously ill. My parents and my husband were also treated", she added.
Dr. Armas explained that when faced with respiratory and cardiac disorders and high blood pressure the team of specialists decided to perform a caesarean section on the patient. The babies -a girl and a boy- had some breathing problems and did not have the appropriate weight, but now they are both safe along with her mother.
The babies are two young to thank the doctors for the assistance received in the health institution, but their mother knows that only a proper health system like Cuba’s could save the three of them.
