Cuba: New Mausoleum Opens in Yaguajay, Sancti Spiritus
The North Front of Las Villas Mausoleum will be inaugurated this Wednesday in Yaguajay, central Cuba, as part of the historical complex already built in that place. The opening of the mausoleum coincides with the 50th anniversary of the death of Camilo Cienfuegos, also known as the Hero of Yaguajay.
The opening of the mausoleum coincides with the 50th anniversary of the death of Camilo Cienfuegos, also known as the Hero of Yaguajay, who led the liberation struggle in that territory since the beginning of October, 1958.
The marble and bronze work, created by local artists Telvia Marin (sculptor) and Pedro Pérez Agudín (architect), shows details and passages of the struggle in which three important military forces took part: Column 2 Antonio Maceo led by Camilo Cienfuegos along with the Maximo Gomez and the 26 of July detachments, both organized in March, 1958.
The remains of the 44 combatants of the North Front of Las Villas will be kept from now on in this place alongside Camilo’s grave, on which the sculptor identified his typical wide-brimmed hat over the sea waves.
According to the artists, the new mausoleum complements what was created by them both twenty years ago -a museum, a square and a monument to the hero.
