Convoluted Situation in Honduras

The recent inauguration in Honduras of businessman Porfirio Lobo, elected in the questionable general elections of last November 29th under the harshness of a military coup, is considered by some as the Central American nation´s “return to normality”.

Convoluted Situation in Honduras

Porfirio Lobo, Honduras´new president.

It would just seem that for certain global mass media nothing abnormal, strange and dirty occured in Honduras since June 2009.

On June 28, 2009, the Honduran constitutional president, Manuel Zelaya, was forced out of his residence and expelled in an airplane to Costa Rica. Then, the military and right-wing extremists took control of the country immediately unleashing a nationwide brutal repression.

It seems that these mainstream media outlets overlook the worldwide rejection of the coup and the heroic and permanent resistance of a nation that turned their back on the coup perpetrators and rejected the rigged elections.

They also demand that the usurpers be tried and, having paid a high cost in lives, they reaffirm that they will not tolerate those who have killed and violated constitutionality, who, by the way, have been exonerated from all guilt by the new authorities.

The truth is that Lobo´s government is much more like a thick facade to mask coups and criminal responsibilities, set up by those who advocate imperialist interests in Honduras and prefer to let time go by to turn awkward situations into dead history.

In fact, experts emphasize that, from the very first hours of the coup until today, these have been the intentions of Washington and the arrogant and defiant Roberto Micheletti.

Apart from one or two occasional comments, the White House completely took distance from the worldwide harsh criticism and condemnation of the de facto regime.

All the time, the US Government searched for a “solution” that would leave untouched the intentions and results of the coup, that is to say, to repress and contain the popular movement, to rift Honduras away from the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of the Americas (ALBA) and to give a harsh blow to the progressive tendencies in the hemisphere and the strengthening of Tegucigalpa´s independence from the United States, among other purposes.

This can be the reason why Porfirio Lobo, during his inauguration before thousands of military and with almost the total abscence of international statesmen and guests, had special words of praise and gratitude for the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and the American Embassy in the Honduran capital.

Lobo´s mission, some mass media outlets say, will be trying “to rebuild Honduras and to restore its foreign relations”. Of course, there will always be people that will soon forget how this illustrative episode of “western democracy” took place.

However, for some others, the stench of fraud and deceitfulness will always be there, as well as their firm and loyal commitment to the brave and dignified people of Honduras.
